World Water Day
Every year we celebrate on 22 March World Water Day. UN General Assembly announced the period 2005-2015 as International Decade “Water for live” to improve the level of knowledge, which will lead to the real actions. The aim of Decade is to enhance the awareness on water issues at all levels and to make favorable conditions for interested organizations and stakeholders to develop the water related programs and projects and to boost the chances of achieving international water-related goals. Water is a dynamic element of the environment and it is one of the main natural resources. Forecasting and monitoring of hydrological phenomena are the milestone for the rational use of water resources and to improve the welfare of the communities by mitigating the water risk. For the last decade the water hazards caused a great number of human and economic losses. According to statistics, floods are among the most distructive types of natural disasters, that take a great number of lives, inundate water facilities which interrupt the public health-dependent ordinary supply of water. The State Hydrometeorological Service is a specialized institution which monitor the environment, provide the information to the adequate agencies in order to reduce the severe water hazards and the risk that the community and economy is facing with. Iresspective of the fact that the water will be studied as water for future generations or water in future, it will be one of the most important, limited and vulnerable available natural resources. The main task of the State Hydrometeorological Service is to assess this natural resource and to forecast its quality in order to ensure and build the capacity of the future generations to protect the water and improve their live.
